The failed Westway proposal resulted in movements to make Riverside Park an official landmark, which would preclude any major construction that would take away parkland. By 1979, NYC Parks was restoring the retaining wall and planning to rehabilitate several playgrounds, while advocates were petitioning the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to make the park an official city landmark.[1] Subsequently, Riverside Park was designated as a New York City scenic landmark in 1980 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1983.[2]
