Methane can also be pyrolysed. This can be useful in the process of producing hydrogen from natural gas as it allows to remove soot easily (soot is a byproduct of the process and damaged the working parts in the past -most notably the nickel-iron-cobaltcatalyst-).[11][12] The soot (which contains the carbon) can then be stored underground and is not released into the atmosphere. It is being done in such research laboratories as Karlsruhe Liquid-metal Laboratory (KALLA).[13]
