In October 1886, a medical examination showed that the scar where the bullet had entered, located two inches below the trochanter major, was the "size of a ten-cent piece" while the exit wound four inches back and two inches below the first scar. His liver and spleen were both enlarged by percussion, his skin looked anemic, the conjunctiva of his eyes were yellowish, and had suffered considerable weight loss.[1]
