Historically, the use of horses as combat animals was very common, both in the context of war as well as rituals and entertainment such as horse-baiting. Organized stallion fighting persists in Southeast Asia (southern China and the Philippines). This results in numerous injuries. Some blows exchanged cause horses' eyes to be sprung from their sockets. Stallions can even pull the ears off of their rivals. Most animals end up covered in bites.[1][2] However, "progress" was made in 2014, to the extent that injured Chinese fighting stallions are no longer systematically killed and consumed on the spot by being cooked on the barbeque, but are treated for their injuries.
